1895 - 1977
Painter in oil and watercolour of landscapes, still life and architectural subjects. Born Charlton in Kent and educated at Dulwich College, he then lived in Midhurst, Sussex for many years. He studied at St. John’s Wood Art School (1912-14) and at the RCA (1919-20). Hill was an official war artist on the Western Front (1917-19). He also published many books on art including "On Drawing and Painting Trees" (1936), "On the Mastery of Water-colour Painting" (1938) and "The Pleasures of Painting" (1952).
His work is represented in several public collections and was elected RBA in 1926, RI 1928, ROI 1929, SGA 1931, PROI 1968. Principal works include: Demolition; Low Tide; Walberwick; Folkestone Harbour; Tower of Souillac, France; The Tourist and The Workshop.
