Semi-abstract painter and sculptor. Educated at Rugby School and Oxford, he went on to study at the Slade School of Art. Appointed to the staff of Achimota College in 1929. This began a long association with West Africa which strongly influenced his painting. Later joined an anthropological survey of Nigeria and afterwards became involved in fishery development on the Cold Coast. Enlisted in the Nigeria Regiment shortly before the war, his battalion forming part of Wingate’s force. 1947 returned to Winterbourne Stickland, England, with his wife to paint, sculpt and teach. As well as an original perceptive artist, Anthony Brown was also variously talented as a deep-sea yachtsman, naturalist, gardener, worker in wood, winemaker, and was also deeply read.
