Born in Glasgow, he studied art as a mature student at Glasgow College of Art and Design under Gillies and Ann Redpath. He is much influenced by the Scottish Colourists. A popular, though reclusive artist, he lives near Glasgow. The Irish landscape, which he visits regularly, features prominently in his work as do Glasgow dock scenes, harbours, barges and flower studies.
