Geoffrey Sneyd Garnier

1889 - 1970

Born in Wigan, Lancashire, Garnier was an engraver of figure subjects and landscapes, married to the painter Jill Garnier (born in Quiddenham, Norfolk). He was educated at Charterhouse and went on to gain a City and Guilds certificate in engineering. Garnier studied art at Bushey, in Toronto and under Stanhope Forbes in Newlyn, Cornwall. His early work was often religious.

He meticulously researched the lost art of the aquatint, but later concentrated on engraving. His work is represented in several public collections including Oldham Art Gallery and Museum. Principal works include: Sand Cart, The Wandering Jew, The End of the Chase and Floods and Reflections. Garnier lived at Newlyn in Cornwall for many years.
