A painter and mother of London-based children’s author and book illustrator Sarah McMenemy (b.1965). Gilia was educated at St Helens, Abingdon, and thereafter at the Oxford School of Art. Following a period of dealing in rare and antiquarian books, Gilia resumed her painting career in 1991. With family roots in East Anglia her paintings explore and express the shade, mood and atmosphere of her native countryside. She lives and works near Woodbridge in Suffolk.
