Herman Shapiro

b. 1933 -

Born in London and now settled in Scotland. He studied at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts (1949-54) where he was taught and greatly influenced by Bloch, Minton and Vaughan and was associated with the acclaimed Camberwell Group. By the mid 1950s he had begun a career as an art teacher in local schools in South Wales and went on to lecture at Cardiff College of Art. His paintings and sculpture are mostly based on the female figure, more recently in a domestic environment. He also enjoys the open, figureless, landscape.

His work is held in permanent collections of the Welsh Arts Council and National Museum of Wales and in many private collections in the UK and Europe.

Young Welsh Artists; Royal Academy; Royal Cambian Academy of Art; Royal West of England Academy; Contemporary Arts Society for Wales; Piccadilly Gallery, London; Howard Roberts Gallery, Cardiff.
