Circus Dance

b. 1943 -

A painter and printmaker born in Famagusta, Cyprus. He Spent his formative years in London, and summers at Great Yarmouth working in family restaurants where his father, a Greek Cypriot, had catering interests. “I believe the speed I paint at is due to working in a busy seaside restaurant”. He studied at Camberwell School of Arts (1960-64) under Auerbach, Procktor and Uglow and graduated from the Royal Academy (1964-1967). The Academy were so impressed by his work that they when they opened a new gallery to show off work by former students in 1972, he was given the very first exhibition there. Works in the spirit of the London Group of Bacon, Auerbach, Kessoff and Michael Andrews, using chance and accident as part of his repertoire. Kiki is a prolific, figurative colourist with an unmistakeable style. He settled permanently in Yarmouth 1974, drawn by “the air (and) the feeling of security it gives me.” In 1989 he was the subject of a film, In the Artist’s Eye, a series made by Franco Rosso for BBC television. His work is held in many permanent collections including: Chantry Bequest; The National Gallery of Wales; The Saatchi Collection.
