His early years were spent afloat, learning the skills of handling and navigating craft on the tideways and estuary of the once busy London River. In this way, he gained an intimate knowledge of a wide variety of craft, both coastal and ocean-going. He experienced the North and South Altantic in winter and summer, both in peace and wartime. Specialises in studies of working craft at sea and along the shoreline, particularly fishing boats and sailing barges. Member of the Wapping Group, of which he was past President.
