A painter, draughtsman and printmaker, born Leigh on Sea, Essex. His father, also Julius, was the creator of the Tiger Tim comic strip. Julius took this on, and taught himself to paint. During World War II he was a Squadron Leader, intelligence Officer and unofficial war artist for the RAF. He took his watercolours with him wherever he was posted and was particularly interested in recording the Chaos that mechanised warfare left behind. The RAF purchased hundreds of his pictures. These are now housed in the Imperial War Museum, the British Museum and V&A. Later in his artistic career he went on to experiment with print techniques. A retrospective was held for him in London in 1989.
