McCarthy studied at Colchester School of Art (1981) and now attends Suffolk College. He is a member of the National Acrylic Painters Association and paints mainly in acrylics but also works in oils, water-colour and pastels. He now lives and works in Ipswich. His work is included in collections in Europe, Hong Kong and the USA.
